What the World Investment Forum is and how it works
The World Investment Forum is a biennial United Nations event run by UN Trade and Development, or UNCTAD, through its Division on Investment and Enterprise. It brings governments, investors, and enterprises into one room to shape how investment is financed, protected, and directed.
Held since 2008
The first edition took place in Accra, Ghana, in 2008. The forum has since met in cities including Xiamen, Doha, Geneva, Nairobi, and Abu Dhabi, and it now marks the UN's leading platform for investment and development.
Biennial, hosted by a partner country
The forum is held every two years and each edition is hosted by a partner government. Hosting places the event inside a live investment market and lets the host country showcase projects, reforms, and incentives.
From heads of state to fund managers
Delegates include heads of state and government, ministers, chief executives of global companies, investment promotion agencies, sovereign wealth and pension funds, stock exchanges, and family businesses.
Dialogue linked to action
The forum connects high level policy dialogue to practical outcomes such as investment matchmaking, new partnerships, and global initiatives. It does not set tariffs and it does not pass binding rules on trade.
World Investment Forum 2026: what happens in Doha
The 9th edition is hosted by the State of Qatar together with UN Trade and Development. It returns to Doha, which first hosted the forum at its 3rd edition in April 2012. The 2026 meeting is framed around one question: how investment can support sustainable development and build resilience at a time of uncertainty.
Programme pillars of the 9th edition
The Doha programme pairs flagship summits with focused tracks on finance, technology, and inclusion. Announced pillars include:
- Global Leaders Investment Summit, the headline gathering of heads of state, ministers, and chief executives.
- Investment and Enterprise Ministerial Roundtable, where governments coordinate investment and entrepreneurship policy.
- Sustainable Stock Exchanges Global Dialogue, linking listed markets to sustainable investment.
- Global investment promotion conference, where agencies pitch locations and projects to investors.
- High level session on investment in the Gulf region, focused on one of the fastest moving host markets.
- Thematic tracks on climate finance, digital transformation, and inclusive growth.
The United Nations does not charge a fee to take part in the meetings of the World Investment Forum. Registration is required, and the full programme and speaker list are published on the official forum site as the event approaches.
Why the forum matters to apparel buyers and exporters
Investment decisions decide where factories are built, where capacity is added, and where supply chains are anchored. The forum is where those decisions are signalled early, which makes it useful reading for anyone who buys or makes apparel at scale.
- $1.6T Global foreign direct investment in 2025, up about 6 percent
- 80%+ Share of global FDI that went to the 20 largest host economies
- 44% Share of greenfield project value in strategic sectors in 2025
- 2008 The forum has run since 2008, now across 9 editions
Where capital is heading
The forum signals which countries and sectors are pulling in long term investment. For a factory or a brand, that is an early read on where production capacity and demand are moving next.
Investment promotion agencies
National and regional agencies use the forum to present incentives, economic zones, and logistics. Apparel manufacturers and buyers can meet the agencies that shape factory investment.
Supply chain resilience
Recent editions foreground resilience, nearshoring, and diversification. Buyers reducing single country exposure use the forum to find new production bases and compare locations.
The Philippines in the global investment picture
The Philippines is a competitive base for export manufacturing, with a young English speaking workforce, up to 100 percent foreign equity allowed in export manufacturing, and modernised fiscal incentives. These are the same themes the forum debates in Doha, so the rules worth knowing are set out below.
