Hong Kong kicked off its annual Environment Day cum Recycling Day celebrations on June 7, 2026, with a launching ceremony that brought together government officials from across the Greater Bay Area. The event marks the beginning of a month-long push to encourage waste reduction, recycling, and green living across the city, running throughout June 2026.

Environment Day and Recycling Day Launch

The Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment), Mr Eddie Cheung, officiated at the launching ceremony, joined by officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, Guangdong Province’s Department of Ecology and Environment, Macao SAR’s Environmental Protection Bureau, and Hong Kong’s Environmental Protection Department (EPD). The ceremony celebrated the 40th anniversary of the EPD and echoed the National Environment Day 2026 initiatives.

The Beautiful Hong Kong Green Fest

The Beautiful Hong Kong Green Fest kicked off on June 1, featuring a full calendar of environmental activities led by the EPD. As part of the festival, Recycling Day activities include the Environment Day cum Recycling Day Carnival, promotional events at 12 GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Stations across the territory, and collaborations with over 200 Recycling Day co-operative partners throughout June.

Growing Environmental Progress

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Cheung highlighted Hong Kong’s encouraging environmental progress. The city’s municipal solid waste disposal quantity has declined for four consecutive years since 2021, while the recycling rate continues to rise. He invited members of the public to actively participate in Recycling Day activities and integrate waste reduction into daily life, working toward the vision of “Zero Landfill.”

The current-term government is implementing environmental protection policies in full steam, striving to achieve carbon neutrality, protect biodiversity, and make Hong Kong a demonstration base for green technologies and a low-carbon, liveable city.

2X GREEN$ Rewards and Community Events

From June 5 through the launch date, the EPD offered double GREEN$ points at the GREEN@COMMUNITY community recycling network, giving residents extra incentive to recycle. Additional activities include a creative short film competition, educational booths, and family-friendly carnival activities designed to make environmental awareness fun and accessible for all ages.
