The Mindanao State University General Santos City system is urgently appealing for national government assistance after a powerful earthquake caused an estimated 870 million pesos in damages across its campus facilities. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on June 8, 2026, left deep scars on one of the city most important educational institutions.

At least 16 buildings within the three locations of the MSU-GSC system sustained significant damage, including structures used for senior high school programs and university-level instruction. The destruction has disrupted the education of thousands of students and raised concerns about when normal operations can resume.

University officials conducted assessments in the aftermath of the quake, with the MSU System President personally visiting the General Santos campus on June 13, 2026, to evaluate the extent of the damage firsthand. The scale of destruction has prompted the university to seek emergency national aid.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was located offshore Sarangani, affected vast areas of Mindanao. General Santos City experienced the highest reported intensity of PEIS VII on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale. Across Mindanao, at least 65 people lost their lives and more than 1,440 were injured.

MSU-GSC has long been a pillar of education in the SOCSKSARGEN region, providing affordable and quality higher education to students from General Santos City and surrounding provinces. The community is rallying behind the university, with calls for swift government response. Stay updated with the latest General Santos City news at phshirt.com.
