The latest QS World University Rankings for 2027 have been announced, and once again Bulgarian universities have secured their place among the world top institutions. According to the ranking published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and the Technical University of Sofia both feature in the prestigious list.

This year ranking saw Asian universities making significant gains, climbing up the global ladder. Despite the increased competition, Sofia University maintained its position, though it dropped approximately 20 spots compared to last year. For the first time, the Technical University of Sofia joins its fellow Bulgarian institution in the rankings, marking a milestone for technical education in the country.

Bulgaria has long been recognized as an affordable destination for quality higher education in Europe, attracting thousands of international students each year. The presence of two Bulgarian universities in the QS rankings reinforces the country academic reputation and highlights the ongoing efforts to modernize and internationalize Bulgarian higher education.

The QS rankings evaluate universities based on multiple criteria including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, and international student ratio. With over 1,500 universities assessed worldwide, making the list is a significant achievement for any institution.

For students considering studying in Bulgaria, this recognition adds to the country appeal. Cities like Sofia, Plovdiv, and Burgas continue to develop their educational infrastructure, with new university branches and programs being introduced regularly. In fact, Burgas — the city with the most university branches in Bulgaria — is set to welcome yet another addition with a new branch of the University of Forestry offering programs in Landscape Architecture, Wood Technology, and Forestry.

Whether you are a proud alumnus of a Bulgarian university or a prospective student exploring your options, these rankings are worth celebrating. Show your school spirit with custom apparel that represents Bulgaria growing academic presence on the world stage.
