The Republic of San Marino is turning into an open-air contemporary art museum. Buonenove 2, the second edition of this innovative urban art project, launches on June 15, 2026 and runs through September 3, 2026, transforming all nine Castles (municipalities) of San Marino with stunning large-scale murals.

9 Artists for 9 Castles

The name says it all — Buonenove plays on the Italian phrase for “good news,” and the number nine is central to the concept. Nine internationally renowned artists are creating nine original mural artworks, one for each Castle of San Marino: San Marino City, Acquaviva, Borgo Maggiore, Chiesanuova, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, Montegiardino, and Serravalle.

More Than Just Murals

Buonenove 2 is an itinerant and widespread event that unfolds across the summer months. New this year is the “9×9: Works Between Walls and Walls” exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Cultural Institutes of the Republic of San Marino. Opening on June 27 at the First Tower (Prima Torre), this indoor show complements the outdoor murals with gallery pieces by the same artists.

The project also features live painting sessions where visitors can watch the artists at work, plus guided bus tours connecting all nine Castle locations — making it easy to experience the full collection in a single day.

Art Meets Tourism

Created by curator Davide Pagliardini, Buonenove is designed to connect contemporary art with San Marino’s deep historical identity. The project encourages both locals and tourists to explore beyond the historic centre and discover the lesser-known corners of the Republic, each Castle offering a unique cultural heritage that now includes a fresh layer of modern expression.

Plan Your Art Journey

All artworks are accessible to the public free of charge, making this a budget-friendly cultural activity for families, art lovers, and curious travellers. Start your tour in the City of San Marino and work your way through the Castles, collecting the murals like a treasure hunt. The event runs until early September, giving you all summer to experience this unique fusion of ancient history and contemporary creativity.

Experience San Marino like never before — where 1,700 years of history meets today’s boldest street artists.
