San Diego is the second-largest city in California and the eighth-largest in the United States, with a population of over 1.4 million. The city was named after Saint Didacus of Alcalá (San Diego de Alcalá in Spanish), a 15th-century Franciscan lay brother. The name has stuck through Spanish, Mexican, and American rule — a reminder of the city’s deep colonial roots.
Balboa Park: San Diego’s Cultural Heart
Balboa Park is the cultural and recreational heart of San Diego. This 1,200-acre urban park was established in 1898 and expanded for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. The Exposition left behind a stunning collection of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that still defines the park’s character today.

The USS Midway, a decommissioned aircraft carrier turned museum, is one of the most popular attractions in the city. Moored at Navy Pier, it offers visitors a chance to explore the flight deck, engine rooms, and living quarters of a ship that served from 1945 to 1992.
Economy and Innovation
San Diego’s economy is diverse and innovation-driven. The metro area has a GDP of over $315 billion. Key sectors include biotechnology and life sciences (the city has one of the highest concentrations of biotech firms in the country), defense and aerospace, telecommunications, and tourism. Qualcomm, one of the world’s largest semiconductor and telecommunications companies, was founded in San Diego in 1985.
The city is also a major hub for craft beer, with more than 150 breweries in the county — more than any other county in the United States. San Diego’s beer scene has earned it the nickname “America’s Craft Beer Capital.”
Neighbourhoods and Culture
San Diego is a city of distinct neighbourhoods. The Gaslamp Quarter in downtown is the entertainment hub, with Victorian-era buildings housing restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Little Italy has become one of the city’s trendiest dining destinations. North Park is known for its hipster vibe, craft coffee shops, and independent bookstores. Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach offer a laid-back surf culture that has defined San Diego since the 1960s.
The city’s proximity to Mexico gives it a strong binational character. The San Ysidro Port of Entry, connecting San Diego to Tijuana, is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere.

San Diego’s climate is often cited as the most pleasant in the United States. The city enjoys an average of 266 sunny days per year, with mild temperatures rarely exceeding 80°F (27°C) or dropping below 50°F (10°C). The warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters create ideal conditions for outdoor living year-round.
