History and Development
The city was originally called Pacific City when it was founded in the late 1800s. In 1903, it was renamed after Henry E. Huntington, the railroad magnate who brought the Pacific Electric Railway to the area and helped develop the region. The city was incorporated on February 17, 1909, making it one of the older incorporated cities in Orange County.
The discovery of oil in the 1920s brought an economic boom, and the Huntington Beach Oil Field was one of the most productive in the region. While oil production has largely ceased, the city has successfully transitioned to a tourism, retail, and service-based economy centered around its beach and lifestyle brand.

Huntington Beach’s 9.5-mile beach is one of the most accessible and well-maintained in California. The city covers 28 square miles, with nearly 5% of its area covered by water — the Bolsa Chica wetlands, the ocean, and the Huntington Harbour residential canal system.
