Norwalk is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located about 17 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. With a population of over 102,000, it is part of the Gateway Cities region and is known as “A Connected Community.” Founded in the late 19th century and incorporated in 1957, Norwalk has grown from a small railroad town into a diverse suburban community with strong ties to its Native American, Spanish, and Mexican heritage.
History and Heritage
The Norwalk area was originally home to the Shoshonean Native American tribe, who lived in the Sejat village and survived on honey, berries, acorns, and game. Spanish settlers arrived in the late 1760s, and the area became part of Rancho Los Nietos, a vast land grant given to Manuel Nieto in 1784. After the Mexican-American War, the land was subdivided, and in 1869, the Sproul Brothers from Oregon purchased 463 acres at $11 an acre, establishing the first permanent American settlement. The arrival of the railroad in 1873 spurred early development, and the city was incorporated on August 26, 1957.
Community and Culture
Norwalk has a diverse and family-oriented community. The city has a large Hispanic population, along with significant Asian, White, and Black communities. The city’s sister cities are Morelia and Hermosillo in Mexico, reflecting its strong Mexican cultural ties. The annual Norwalk Fiesta and the Holiday Parade are beloved community traditions.
The city is home to the Norwalk Town Square shopping center, the Civic Center, and the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex. The city’s parks, including Norwalk Park and the Los Alamitos Channel Trail, provide green space and recreational opportunities for residents.

Norwalk sits at just 92 feet above sea level on the coastal plain of Los Angeles County. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The city covers 9.75 square miles and enjoys over 280 days of sunshine per year. The San Gabriel River and the Los Alamitos Channel flow near the city.
From a Shoshonean village to a Spanish land grant to a modern suburban community, Norwalk’s story is one of connection — a city that has always been a crossroads of cultures and communities in southeastern Los Angeles County.
