Simi Valley is a city in Ventura County, California, located in the valley of the same name, about 37 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Simi Valley is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, one of the most visited presidential libraries in the United States. The library houses millions of documents, photographs, and artifacts from Reagan’s presidency, as well as a full-scale replica of the Oval Office and Air Force One Pavilion. Chumash Heritage and Early History
Simi Valley was originally inhabited by the Chumash people for thousands of years. The name “Shimiyi” refers to the thread-like clouds that form over the valley, a natural phenomenon noted by the Chumash and preserved through the work of anthropologist John P. Harrington. After Spanish colonization, the area became part of the Mexican land grant system. The city was incorporated on October 10, 1969, and grew rapidly as a bedroom community for Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley after the construction of the Santa Susana Pass freeway.
Corriganville and Old West Heritage
Simi Valley has a unique connection to Hollywood’s Western film era. Corriganville Movie Ranch, located in the hills above the city, was a popular filming location for hundreds of Westerns, TV shows, and movies from the 1930s through the 1960s.
