Simi Valley is a city in Ventura County, California, located in the valley of the same name, about 37 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. With a population of over 126,000, it is the third-most populous city in Ventura County and part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The city is surrounded by the Santa Susana Mountains and the Simi Hills, west of the San Fernando Valley and northeast of the Conejo Valley. Its name comes from the Chumash word “Shimiyi,” referring to the stringy, thread-like clouds that typify the region.

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

Simi Valley is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, one of the most visited presidential libraries in the United States. The library houses millions of documents, photographs, and artifacts from Reagan’s presidency, as well as a full-scale replica of the Oval Office and Air Force One Pavilion. President Reagan was buried on the library grounds in 2004, and the site remains a pilgrimage destination for conservatives and history enthusiasts from around the world.

Chumash Heritage and Early History

Simi Valley was originally inhabited by the Chumash people for thousands of years. The name “Shimiyi” refers to the thread-like clouds that form over the valley, a natural phenomenon noted by the Chumash and preserved through the work of anthropologist John P. Harrington. After Spanish colonization, the area became part of the Mexican land grant system. The city was incorporated on October 10, 1969, and grew rapidly as a bedroom community for Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley after the construction of the Santa Susana Pass freeway.

Corriganville and Old West Heritage

Simi Valley has a unique connection to Hollywood’s Western film era. Corriganville Movie Ranch, located in the hills above the city, was a popular filming location for hundreds of Westerns, TV shows, and movies from the 1930s through the 1960s. Stars like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and John Wayne filmed here. Today, Corriganville is a public park with hiking trails and remnants of the old movie sets, offering visitors a chance to walk through Old West streets and explore the natural beauty of the Santa Susana Mountains.

Community and Quality of Life

Simi Valley is known for its high quality of life, with excellent public schools, low crime rates, and abundant parks and open spaces. The city has over 50 parks, including the popular Rancho Simi Community Park and the Simi Hills Park. The city’s trail system offers hiking, biking, and equestrian opportunities through the surrounding mountains and hills.

The city is home to the Simi Valley Town Center, a shopping and dining destination, and the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, which hosts concerts, theater productions, and community events. The annual Simi Valley Days celebration and the Fourth of July fireworks show are beloved community traditions.

Climate and Geography

Simi Valley sits at 768 feet above sea level in a valley surrounded by the Santa Susana Mountains and the Simi Hills. Summers are warm and dry, with temperatures occasionally reaching the mid-90s°F (35°C). Winters are mild, with most rainfall occurring between November and March. The city covers 42 square miles and enjoys over 280 days of sunshine per year. The surrounding mountains provide hiking, biking, and scenic views of the valley.

From a Chumash village to a presidential library to a thriving suburban community, Simi Valley’s story is one of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and quality of life — a city that has grown while preserving the landscape and history that make it special.
