The New York County Courthouse at 60 Centre Street in Manhattan is the most prominent courthouse in the United States. Also known as the NY State Supreme Court Courthouse, it has been the stage for some of the most sensational and historically significant trials in American history.

A Monument to Justice

Completed in 1927, designed by Guy Lowell in neoclassical style. The massive Corinthian columns and inscription “The True Administration of Justice Is the Firmest Pillar of Good Government” make it one of America’s most distinguished public buildings. Its Great Hall has appeared in countless films and TV shows including “Law & Order.”

Notable Trials

Charles Manson was tried here in 1971. John Gotti, Dennis Kozlowski, and Enron executives faced justice within these halls. The 1985-86 “Mafia Commission Trial” brought down the heads of New York’s Five Families.

Architecture and Art

WPA-era murals by Edward Trumbull and Barry Faulkenberry adorn the interior. The rotunda beneath the dome is one of the most photographed public spaces in Lower Manhattan.

Law and Order Fame

The building’s exterior is instantly recognizable from “Law & Order” and countless legal dramas. The steps leading to the entrance have become synonymous with the American justice system.
