The New York Court of Appeals is the highest court in the State of New York. Located at 20 Eagle Street in Albany, directly across from the State Capitol, the Beaux-Arts building has housed New York’s top court since 1917.
The Highest Court in the Empire State
The Court of Appeals is arguably the most influential state supreme court in America. Its decisions on criminal law, civil rights, and constitutional issues have shaped legal precedent nationwide. Seven judges hear appeals from lower courts.
Landmark Decisions
In 1906, Judge Benjamin Cardozo wrote the landmark MacPherson v. Buick decision here, establishing modern product liability doctrine. The court has ruled on groundbreaking cases involving free speech, criminal procedure, and accused rights.
The Building
Designed by Henry Hornbostel in classical style. The interior features a magnificent courtroom with ornate woodwork, marble columns, and coffered ceiling. The rotunda is open to visitors.

Located at 20 Eagle Street in Albany. Court sessions are open to the public — visitors can observe oral arguments on most weekdays.
