Districts of Slovakia (Okresy): All 79 Districts by Region

Slovakia is divided into 79 districts, called okresy in Slovak, and each one sits inside one of the eight regions, the kraje. For an apparel importer that map is a working tool: it shows where an order lands once it crosses the border of a landlocked country, and which inland terminal feeds the last mile. This page lists every district by region, with its 2025 population and its area, then maps the sea, air, rail and road gateways that bring garments from the Philippines into Slovakia.

The Register

All 79 Districts, Grouped by Region

Each region below lists its districts in full, with the 2025 population and the area in square kilometres. A district is named after its seat, the district town, which is usually the largest town in the area. The register runs the same order as the parent region page, from the capital in the west to the eastern freight hub around Košice.

Where Garments Reach Slovakia

Slovakia is landlocked, so a Philippine apparel consignment always crosses the sea leg at a foreign port before it reaches Slovak territory. From there it enters through four kinds of gateway, and each row names the gateway and the region or country where it sits.

Districts of Slovakia FAQ

How many districts does Slovakia have?

Slovakia has 79 districts, called okresy in Slovak, with one okres singular. They sit below the eight regions, called kraje, and above the municipalities, called obce. The capital Bratislava is divided into five districts, Bratislava I to V, and the city of Košice into four, Košice I to IV, which together account for nine of the 79.

What is an okres in Slovakia?

An okres is a district, the second tier unit of state administration, below a kraj and above an obec. Each district is administered by a district office, the okresný úrad. Several districts form a region, and each district is made up of several municipalities.

How are the 79 districts divided across the eight regions?

The counts by region are Bratislava 8, Trnava 7, Trenčín 9, Nitra 7, Žilina 11, Banská Bystrica 13, Prešov 13, and Košice 11, for a total of 79. Banská Bystrica and Prešov carry the most districts, and Trnava and Nitra the fewest.

Why do Bratislava and Košice have numbered districts?

Bratislava and Košice are the only Slovak cities divided into internal urban districts. Bratislava has five, Bratislava I to V, and Košice has four, Košice I to IV. These urban districts are further divided into boroughs, which serve a role similar to the municipalities in the typical rural districts.

How is a district named and where is its seat?

Each district is named after its administrative seat, the district town, which is usually the largest town in the district. Two known exceptions stand out. The seat of Košice-okolie is the city of Košice, which is not part of the district at all, and the seat of Ilava district, the town of Ilava, is smaller than Dubnica nad Váhom inside the same district.

Do import rules change from one district to another?

No. Import rules, duties, product safety obligations and textile labelling requirements are set nationally and across the European Union, so they do not change from one okres to another. The district affects the routing, the gateway and the final local delivery, not the customs rules themselves. Confirm the current requirements with a licensed Slovak customs broker before shipping.

Do all 79 districts matter for an apparel shipment?

The destination district decides the last mile. Most districts are reached by road from an inland terminal at Bratislava, Dunajská Streda or Žilina. Districts along the western belt near the capital and the Czech and Austrian borders turn around fastest, while the eastern districts around Košice and Prešov are served through the eastern rail and air nodes.

What is the minimum order for shipping apparel to Slovakia?

50 pieces per design for custom production. Blank stock minimums depend on the brand, colour and size mix. The quotation states the commercial terms that apply to the actual order.
