Regions of Slovakia (Kraje): All 8 Regions Across 4 Statistical Areas

Slovakia is divided into eight regions, called kraje in Slovak, and for an apparel importer that map is a working tool. It shows which regions carry the airports, the Danube river ports, the intermodal rail terminals, and the road borders that move garments into and across a landlocked country. This page lists all eight kraje with their English and Slovak names, their capital, their population, and what each place contributes to the trade, grouped into the four statistical areas used for European Union regional policy.

All 8 Kraje, Grouped by Statistical Area

The four areas below are the NUTS 2 statistical groupings used for European Union regional policy. They are not separate governments, so the boundaries exist for planning and funding rather than for local rule. The eight kraje remain the units of regional government, and the counts add up to exactly eight. The order runs west to east, the way a container moves inland from the Adriatic gateway.

Where Garments Reach Slovakia

Slovakia is landlocked, so a Philippine apparel consignment always crosses the sea leg at a foreign port before it reaches Slovak territory. From there it enters through four kinds of gateway, and each row names the gateway and the region or country where it sits.

Regions of Slovakia FAQ

How many regions does Slovakia have?

Slovakia has eight regions, called kraje in Slovak, with one kraj singular. The present set dates from the 1996 administrative reform, after a period without kraje between 1990 and 1996. Each kraj corresponds to a NUTS 3 unit in the European Union classification. Since 2002 the same eight territories also exist as regions with their own elected government, called vyššie územné celky in the Slovak Constitution.

What is a kraj in Slovakia?

A kraj is the highest level of regional government below the national state. Each one has a regional assembly and an elected governor, known as the predseda, who runs the regional government, alongside a state office that represents the central government. A kraj is made up of okresy, the districts, which are further divided into obce, the municipalities. Slovakia has 79 districts in total.

What are the four statistical areas of Slovakia?

Eurostat groups the eight kraje into four NUTS 2 statistical areas: SK01 Bratislava, which is the capital kraj alone, SK02 Western Slovakia with Trnava, Trenčín, and Nitra, SK03 Central Slovakia with Žilina and Banská Bystrica, and SK04 Eastern Slovakia with Prešov and Košice. The areas are statistical units used for European Union regional policy, not separate governments.

Which region holds the capital and the main gateways?

The Bratislava Region holds the capital city, and with it the country seat of government and business. The national air gateway at Bratislava Airport, the Danube port at Bratislava, and the Bratislava východ marshalling yard all sit inside this single kraj. It is the smallest region by area and the most economically concentrated.

Does Slovakia have a seaport?

No. Slovakia is landlocked and has no sea coast, so the ocean leg of a shipment always ends at a foreign port. Apparel containers from the Philippines normally discharge at the Adriatic port of Koper in Slovenia, about 536 km from Bratislava, or at Rijeka in Croatia, and then move overland by rail or road. Some routings use the North Sea ports of Hamburg and Rotterdam instead. The Danube river ports at Bratislava and Komárno handle barges, not ocean vessels.

Where does air freight enter Slovakia?

Most air cargo clears at Vienna International Airport in Austria, about 49 km west of Bratislava and roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road. Bratislava Airport is the national gateway for belly and express cargo, and Košice Airport serves the eastern industrial region. For heavyweight consignments, Frankfurt or Prague can be used with a bonded road feeder to Slovakia.

How does rail freight move across Slovakia?

Once a container is discharged at Koper or a North Sea port, rail carries the inland leg. ŽSR manages the track and ZSSK Cargo operates freight on the main Bratislava to Žilina to Košice spine and the Rhine Danube corridor. Direct container shuttles run from Koper to Bratislava and Žilina, and inland intermodal terminals at Bratislava, Dunajská Streda, and Žilina distribute boxes onward. The 1,520 mm broad gauge line from Uzhhorod reaches the Košice area in the east.

Do import rules change from one region to another?

No. Import rules, duties, product safety obligations, and textile labelling requirements are set nationally and across the European Union, so they do not change from one kraj to another. The region affects the routing, the gateway, and the final local delivery, not the customs rules themselves. Confirm the current requirements with a licensed Slovak customs broker before shipping.
