Record Interest in Denmark’s Premier Running Event
The Copenhagen Marathon 2027 has shattered all expectations, with a staggering 80,937 runners applying for just 35,000 available starting slots, organizers Sparta Atletik & Løb announced on June 11, 2026. The overwhelming demand marks a historic moment for Danish road running and confirms Copenhagen’s status as one of Europe’s premier marathon destinations.
Lottery System for Fair Access
For the first time in its history, the Copenhagen Marathon will allocate starting numbers through a random lottery system. The decision comes after the 2026 edition sold out in under 24 hours, leaving thousands of eager runners without a spot. The three-week application window gave runners worldwide an equal opportunity to register, regardless of where they live.
“The massive interest shows that Copenhagen is now among Europe’s most attractive marathon destinations,” said Dorte Vibjerg, CEO of Sparta Atletik & Løb. “With the lottery system, everyone had a fair three-week window to sign up. It gave far more people a real chance to participate.”
Global Appeal and Diverse Participation
Aspiring marathoners from more than 160 nationalities submitted applications. Unsurprisingly, Denmark accounts for the largest share of applicants, followed by Sweden and the United Kingdom. Women represent 37 percent of applicants — a significant increase from the 2026 event, where women made up under 30 percent of participants. The largest age group among applicants is 25 to 29 years old, accounting for 23.5 percent of entries, highlighting the growing popularity of marathon running among younger adults.
What Runners Can Expect
The Copenhagen Marathon 2027 will take runners on a 42.195-kilometer journey through the Danish capital’s most iconic streets and landmarks. The route passes scenic waterfront areas, historic sites, and vibrant city neighborhoods, creating an unforgettable running experience for participants and spectators alike. The race is scheduled for May 9, 2027.
For those who don’t secure a spot in the lottery, running enthusiasts can still enjoy Copenhagen’s vibrant running culture year-round. The city’s extensive network of running paths, including the popular Lakes route and the harbor front, offers plenty of opportunities for training and recreation. Many local running clubs organize weekly group runs that welcome visitors and new members alike.
Gear Up for the Race
Whether you’re training for Copenhagen Marathon 2027 or simply love running, proper gear makes all the difference. From moisture-wicking shirts to performance athletic wear, having the right apparel keeps you comfortable on the road. Custom-printed running gear is also a popular way to celebrate race day — many Copenhagen runners sport personalized shirts on race day to stand out in the crowd.
Copenhagen’s Running Community Keeps Growing
The record-breaking application numbers reflect a broader trend across Denmark and Europe. Marathon running continues to surge in popularity, with events like the Copenhagen Marathon leading the charge. The city’s flat, fast course and enthusiastic crowd support make it a favorite among both first-timers and seasoned marathoners chasing personal bests.
